Through our Produce on Wheels After Hours, our new Veterans Exact Thanks (VETs) program, and our partnership with the Arizona Department of Corrections, Borderlands is able to ensure that our mission is served by creating opportunities for community members to engage on issues of food insecurity, food waste and produce rescue.
Borderlands work in the community
For our 2016 - 2017 produce season we are rolling out a new program, Veterans Exact Thanks (VETs). We launched this project as a way to directly support veterans in our communities who are unable to make ends meet, and are in need of food assistance. We understand the great contribution of veterans to our country, and want to give back given the disproportionate number of vets currently in need.
Each month throughout the season we'll be displaying our VETs Boot with the goal of having supporters fill it to the brim with non-perishable goods. All of the items donated will be provided directly to a veterans serving program in Arizona.
Since 1996, Borderlands has partnered with the Arizona Department of Corrections to provide a job training site for 12 inmates every year. Borderlands offers inmates a wide array of certificates and the opportunity to learn several different positions in our warehouse, from working the floor to learning about the distribution process.
Inmates placed at Borderlands have the opportunity to take part in every aspect of our work, everything from the day-to-day operations at our warehouse, all the way to the distribution process. In addition to hands-on training, Borderlands also creates opportunities for inmates to share their own skills and creativity; every painting adorning the walls of our warehouse is the work of an inmate.
Through our After Hours distribution program we make produce available to registered non-profit agencies at any of our weekend produce distribution sites. Organizations wanting to take part in this project should just come to any of our sites, after we are done serving the general public. Our After Hours program allows organizations (registered with Borderlands) to take up to 10 boxes of each variety of any produce available. All After Hours produce is available on a first come basis.
